There's a lot that has to be accounted for here, but I can't be the only one stuck here, right? The note mentioned living near "The White Rabbit" and "Pinga..."

...which brings me to my next question: Merlin? I've never heard of him before, but how is it I suddenly know everything about him? He sounds a lot like Star Swirl the Bearded, but none of this makes sense! And my horn is missing! I don't see the purpose of making me fill in for a wizard if I don't even have my magic with me...

As others have explained, he was a powerful wizard who tutored and then later assisted the king.

However, the reports of his wisdom are exaggerated at best. He was learned, certainly. However, he was quite an obnoxious person, prone to pranks which caused a great deal of mischief.

It is probably best that you not mimic him.

That is good. His pranks were quite of the malicious nature and caused more problems than laughter... other than for himself, at the very least.

One particular spell he performed was one that is unknown due to the true nature of the king, hence even those familiar with his legends do not know of it. He was quite adept at manipulating the perceptions of others, casting an enchantment over all the people of Britain.
