[A short transmission today; Howl's walks around the marketplace have got him thinking about opening up a store of his own, like the ones he once ran back home. So here he appears now, fingers interlaced before him, chin resting on top of them contemplatively.]

I'm thinking of starting a business to sell my spells. But I'd need an assistant.

Hmm...

[Howl thinks for a while. There's not much he can do using only the magic of air, but he can maybe produce something like an alarm... Though why Domon would want an alarm to go off when he approaches people, he doesn't know.]

What about a siren?

Maybe. How would that work? It can't be anything I'd need to wear, the wolf would just rip it off. And I don't want siren constantly going off when I'm myself either.

[The sort of spell Domon wants wouldn't have been a problem, normally. As it is, Howl will have to get a bit creative.]

It might be possible for me to craft the spell in a way that will allow it only to activate when the animal - a wolf, yes? - is present. I can make it into a powder that you can dust yourself with, but then I'll need to renew the spell every few months or so.

Maybe... [He stops and thinks for a long moment, looking concerned.] I'm worried having a siren constantly in it's ear would make the wolf more aggressive. Any way to make it so the wolf won't hear it? [Domon knew he was asking a lot, but he didn't want to accidentally make things worse instead of better.]

[ Howl hums in thought. There's no answer from him for a few minutes, until he recalls the peculiar whistles that dog handlers use. Weren't wolves just like wild dogs? If he can make air vibrate at a high enough pitch to make a siren, maybe there was a range which wolves couldn't hear. ]

I might be able to, [ he says doubtfully. He wouldn't know what the human hearing range or the wolf hearing range is. ] I could reverse the principle used to make whistles for dogs.

There's no way to know what it might or might not hear. I don't want this to backfire. [Another pause for thinking.] Maybe if I turn partially again without losing control of myself, we can test it.

That would be ideal. But is it possible to control such a transformation? It seems to me you aren't a simple shape-shifter...

I can't control it at all. But the Rulers seem to like trying to turn us into our denizens. If it happens again, we might as well take advantage of it. If it doesn't... I have an idea how to keep myself contained on full moons. If it works, you could test it then. If you'd be willing to take the chance to get close enough, anyway.

[And he will totally understand if Howl wants to stay far away from him while he's even partially changed, but might as well through the idea out there.]

Ahh, you're a werewolf then. [ No looks of horror from him, just a nod of understanding. ] I could observe from a roof, maybe. If I keep out of sight and out of the wind then I shouldn't be noticed.

[ His magic can help with the wind part and redirect his scent. If the wolf likes to run around though (and he suspects it probably does)... ]

Maybe. It moves around a lot but you might be able to bait it to come close enough. And it never goes inside, so if there's a hatch in the roof you can go through quickly, you should be safe even if it sees you.

Is there a hatch leading up to the roofs here?

[ He's never investigated the house, and he's certainly never tried going up to the roof. ]

Though even if there is, I'm not entirely sure what I would bait a werewolf with...

[ Please don't say human corpses. ]

I don't think so, but it shouldn't be too hard to make one.

[He's never tried to alter the outside of the houses but even if they had to put it in manually it shouldn't be too hard. Right?]

Use livestock. It's what the wolf hunts when it... can't find what it wants. Just uh... don't use sheep. [Because remembering killing an animal and eating it raw is bad enough without having to pick the wool out of his teeth the next morning.]

No, that's all right. I can just use a ladder.

[ As Domon describes what to use as bait, he nods and makes a small note on a piece of paper. ]

Must it be livestock? Or can I purchase meat from the marketplace and use that?

But if it chases you onto the roof and you can't get inside, I could end up hurting you.

Might work, might not. That thing won't turn down free food, but it loves the hunt.

[He sighed.] Maybe I can find away to restrain myself before the change happens, and you can test it that way.

Well, I'll see what I can do about obtaining livestock... As for the roof, I can bring a temporary bedroll there if that's all right with you. I don't mind sleeping rough for one night, and the nights aren't very cold at the moment. As long as the wolf can't climb up and get me, I can sleep up there once I'm done with my experiments.

That's the problem. It can. If you couldn't get inside quick... Look, I have an idea on how I might be able to keep myself contained. If it works, I'll let you know. If it doesn't, I think this would be too risky.
