[Howl finally feels brave enough to show his face (and his lovely dark hair) on the communicators. You may catch a glimpse of a mirror in the background, floating behind his head.]

While I quite enjoy looking at myself in the mirror, I think having one follow me around is a bit much. Is this the sort of punishment the Rulers typically deliver?

The note the Rulers left says it is a token of their appreciation, but it surely can't be. Not after they tried to imprison and kill us.

Kill? I must have missed that. Mind telling me about it?

[He turns on the filter option, just in case the Rulers get angry at something he says.]

Francis and a friend of his organised the building of a ship to take us away from the island. But just as we had begun to sail, two of the Rulers - I think they were Justice and Judgement - appeared on the beach with a hoard of minions and captured us all. They took us to the castle but someone called The World locked them and the rest temporarily in a dungeon and let us explore. Only they broke free and still imprisoned us, trapping us in a dream.

I'm not sure what happened next, but we were all woken up and then the wall disappeared, letting us escape into the forest. I'm fairly sure the wild animals in there were meant to kill us.

[A filter! Fascinating. Mia's looking strangely amused and intrigued by this.]

I see... the Arcana, huh?

[Strange, she never quite thought of the arcana when she heard the phrase "The World". But maybe it did have some significance, in a somewhat irrelevant way.]

Sounds like they're fairly set on us staying. It could be worse, of course.

How could it be worse? They kill us if we try and get away from this island!

[Howl hasn't been in Arcanarum long enough to realise the significance of the Rulers being named after the Arcana. He doesn't even know the island is named after that.]

Have you played a game called The World? An online game, specifically.

[Such a strange thing for a cat-person to ask, isn't it?]

What is an 'online' game?

[He's wondering if this is a cat's metaphor for the game of life or something. ~~And really, stranger things have happened in his world. Unusual happenings are not uncommon.~~]

I keep running into those who don't know what it is...

[A tilt of the head, and a bit of an exhale - it's a little hard to read her exact expression.]

How was I born? From my mother, how else...?

There are many ways to be born. And those who don't know... well, I tend to know what they are from that.

...I'm not sure I understand your meaning.

[He looks perplexed. As far as he knows, there's only one way for a child to be born...?]

Sometimes, someone simply... comes to be.

[Howl thinks about this, tries to discern Mia's meaning. Does she mean that something (rather, someone) that doesn't exist one day suddenly does? It sounds incredibly similar to how life just comes into being, but it doesn't seem like she's referring to that.]

...Could you give me an example?

If you've never experienced, I don't know if you'll understand.

[And she's not sure she likes the idea of using herself as an example.]

Try me. My teachers said I was very quick to learn when I was studying magic.

[Howl is genuinely curious at the possibility of learning something new about the genesis of life.]

You're at least familiar with computers, yes? Imagine a world made entirely of data and not from atoms.

Computers-- no, not really, I'm afraid. My world seems to be less advanced than others'. I don't know what atoms are either.

[Unless she's willing to give him a crash course in computer technology and basic science, this might be a little difficult.]

Then you won't understand, no matter how I explain. It will all be a riddle with no context, as though I speak a foreign language.

If you say so... [He is a bit disappointed though.] I suppose it's hard to explain centuries of development in one sitting.
